it annoys me how everyone's angry at the shitty football referees at the world cup. referees can never be truly fair. look at other sports. the afl football umpires always slightly favour victorian-based teams. it's like there is some kind of social order within the sixteen teams and there is always one team that is more favoured than another, and everyone just plainly dislikes anyone from interstate, except like sydney because they have a victorian heritage.

fuck the umpiring and just think that football is fun.

long time no type. yep.

well i am still here. these holidays have gone by so fast. it's not like i didn't expect it but still it seems like i've done little going out, little sleep, little homework. remarkably enough i haven't been sick or anything all holidays, although everyone else seems to have been unwell. i wanted to go out today. [info]tartanhatter was ill and everyone else seemed busy. we didn't do anything. this means we didn't get radio birdman tickets. i need to get radio birdman tickets. how could i say no to these pretty fellas?

i'm working again. it shouldn't take too long to repay the concert ticket debt to myself.
we have absolutely nothing to eat. i've eaten vegemite on toast for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
i've recently realised that i've been using stricly lower-case letters in text messages for as long as i can remember.
i also found these, from a long time ago...

You're practically too cool for words. You've got more indie rock knowledge in your pinky finger than Guided By Voices has songs! You went to your first Mudhoney concert when you were 14. You knew Green Day before they sold out to the masses. You can name every side project Lou Barlow has been in, complete with all album and song titles. You throw out words like "Thurston," "lo-fi," and "Kill Rock Stars." You wear jeans, old band tees, Converse. You hang with other gurus and people you can lord over. You're intelligent, but big-headed. Passionate, but hot-tempered. You will one day rule the earth.

[music |gimme danger - iggy and the stooges]

1st ANNOUNCEMENT !!

BIG DAY OUT is more than a little chuffed to announce the return of THE WHITE STRIPES. Since their last BDO visit in 2002, our old friends Jack and Meg have dropped two universally acclaimed albums, “Elephant” and this year’s “Get Behind Me Satan”, not to mention an era-defining single in the shape of “Seven Nation Army”. They are the rock icons of our time, topping charts worldwide and selling a quarter of a million albums in Australia alone. Their simple, two-person, guitar and drums line-up belies a huge blues/garage/country/folk/rock’n’roll cacophony. There is no mistaking and no resisting the sound of THE WHITE STRIPES, direct from Detroit to BIG DAY OUT.

BIG DAY OUT is rolling out the red carpet to herald the arrival of rock royalty – IGGY & THE STOOGES. “Search and Destroy”, “I Wanna Be Your Dog”, “No Fun,” “Down on the Street” – THE STOOGES’ dangerous and grimy ‘60s-‘70s catalogue was the blueprint for every punk rock, garage rock and metal band to come. After 30 years apart, THE STOOGES reformed in 2003 to contribute to Iggy’s album “Skull Ring” and to play a string of rapturously received shows. Now it’s Australia’s turn, but be warned, this ain’t no nostalgia trip – this is the iconic IGGY POP and the original underground sound of THE STOOGES. We’re not worthy!

A little Southern charm will go a long way when KINGS OF LEON charm the pants right off the BIG DAY OUT. The Followill boys (three brothers and one cousin) burst outta Nashville in 2003 with “Youth and Young Manhood”, a butt-kicking debut of garage rock, boozy blues, rootsy riffs and a dash of country. Soon the uber-cool foursome were gracing the covers of rock mags across the globe, and gracing the 2004 BIG DAY OUT stage. From the first album’s primal rock, KOL leapt into darker, more emotional territory with last year’s “Aha Shake Heartbreak”. The tales are still twisted, Caleb still howls like a man possessed, but this is an altogether different trip. A band with a rock show good enough to break and shake your heart, please welcome back KINGS OF LEON.

No strangers to the BIG DAY OUT, we are delighted to herald the return of THE MARS VOLTA in 2006 . Led by former At the Drive-In vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala and guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, THE MARS VOLTA have taken music to new frontiers over two mind-blowing concept albums, “De-Loused in the Comatorium” and “Frances the Mute”. Beyond genres, they blend sci-fi, primal punk, electronic pulses, hair-raising vocals, Latin grooves and classic rock with a charisma and conviction you can’t tear your eyes or ears away from. More than just a live show, THE MARS VOLTA are an experience.

Portland, Oregon’s original riot grrrls SLEATER-KINNEY bring their feminine wiles to BIG DAY OUT. Over 11 years and seven albums, Carrie, Corin and Janet have been producing visceral anthems of provocative, urbane, enraged, noisy, politically-charged, funky, angular punk rock. Their latest, the Dave Fridmann-produced “The Woods”, is their most challenging effort yet, taking the trio into panoramic new territory. Always a formidable live force, SLEATER-KINNEY are a band we’re proud to welcome to the BIG DAY OUT.

THE LIVING END were an instant hit with Australian audiences in the late 90s, and the BIG DAY OUT hails the return of one of this country’s most loved alternative punk rock/ rockabilly bands. Currently in the studio putting the finishing touches on their new album, Chris, Scott and Andy will dish out one helluva blistering set of surging rock anthems this summer when they play the BIG DAY OUT.

FUCK YEAH!!

Well it's true that we love one another
I love Jack White like a little brother
Well Holly I love you too but there's just so much
That I don't know about you
Jack give me some money to pay my bills
All the dough I give you Holly
You been using on pain pills
Jack will you call me if you're able?
I got your phone number written
In the back of my bible
Jack I think you're pulling my leg
And I think maybe I'd better ask Meg
Meg do you think Jack really loves me?
You know, I dont care because Jack really bugs me
Why dont you ask him now?
Well I would but Meg, I really just don't know how
Just say Jack, do you adore me?
Well I would Holly but love really bores me
Well maybe we should just be friends
I'm just kidding Holly
You know that I'll love you till the end
Well it's true that we love one another
I love Jack White like a little brother
Well Holly I love you too but there's just so much
That I don't know about you
Holly give me some of your
English lovin'
If I did that Jack I'd have one in
the oven
Why don't you go off and love yourself
If I did that Holly there
won't be anything left
For anybody else
Jack it's too bad
About the way that you look
You know I gave that horse a carrot
So he'd break your foot
Will the two of you cut it out
And tell 'em what it's really all about
Well it's true that we love one another
I love Jack White like a little brother
Well Holly I love you too
But there's just so much
That I don't know about you

I wish that I had a father that looked like a member of Canned Heat and worked at my school canteen. [Sep. 13th, 2005|11:50 pm]
[music |tristessa - the smashing pumpkins]

nothing's new.

life drawing's over. we had the art show on last friday. it was fairly good, nothing special though. too small and cramped up as they had it in the library. i realised that there are about 5 actual artists in the school and the rest are absolute hacks. i liked my naked fat woman.

i've been spending too much money on food and coffee and the occasional cd.

brad and i seem to be tied at the hip. we're on first name basis with the coffee guy from degraves. we have plans of day-long outings, consisting of political rants on conspiracy theories and cannibalism + a lot of coffee and good music.

mammoth seinfeld marathon at nikki's may be on the cards. waynes's world double is definitely on. our birthday celebrations are fast approaching.

today i realised that one of the parents that works at the school canteen looks like he has just come out of canned heat. i can just imagine him grabbing a guitar and playing some psychedelic-bluesy thing. he would be awesome as well. it took him about 3 minutes to give me the right coke today, as he kept giving me wrong flavours and diets. it must be the years of sex and drugs, along with the rock'n'roll. he would have been the biggest acid-trippin' hippie to come out of the south.

gish is an incredible album.

drawing figure 8s [Aug. 23rd, 2005|01:38 pm]
[music |leaving home - jebediah]

yesterday tomos and i went to maccas where ed works and got free meals. then i went to missing link to look for a CD to buy my sister for her birthday that was in may. i didn't find one, so i bought myself a CD. Figure 8 by Elliott Smith. it is absolutely brilliant.

i was feeling sick from all the maccas in life drawing. we drew a bigger woman, and she was probably the most fun to draw out of all the people we have had so far. now i sort of understand why my dad always draws bigger women (he is an artist) - they are just good fun to draw.

i've also been thinking about putting on a srpska zurka for matija and my birthdays in a month's time. mine is on the 22nd and his on the 26th, so we are thinking the 24th, and it falls right on a saturday!

the formal [Aug. 23rd, 2005|01:15 pm]
[music |LA - elliott smith]

well...we had our formal on friday night, at albert by the lake. i'd organised to go to the dowlings' beforehand for pre-formal drinks, but brad gave me the wrong address so it took me longer than it should have to get there and get changed + it was raining and i had to catch a train there. jack and andrew, tim, mitch and dave keating were there as well. brad came a while after me, and he was partner-less as well. adela was picking us up. wednesday, his date was making her own way there because she lives on the other side of the city. the guys left in maxi-cabs, and we waited for adela. she was fairly late, not that it mattered because we were only late according to the invite and didn't really miss out on anything it all, but the funny think is that she was only coming from caulfield and her dad's car has a full-on navigator thing built into it that actually TELLS YOU where to turn, and it still took them more than half an hour to get to jack and andrew's.

the venue was nice + everyone looked absolutely beautiful, as you can see on a_nymphs_chair's latest post. i will post a few photos myself when i scan them. the food was ordinary and the music was okay. brad and i had loads of fun crazily dancing to 80s disco classics. YMCA was a favourite, especially the way brandon got into it from the stage with his shirt unbuttoned. the fairy floss was another highlight.

after-party at the felix bar. verdict: big disaster. the cops busted it an hour in. i listened to black sabbath for half of that hour. then tim and i caught a taxi back to jack and andrew's. we had a gay ol' time there, mainly because mitch would not shut-the-fuck-up or stop talking about dick-sucks (or DSs as he calls them) and the fact that i walked into krause and...never mind.

in the morning i rampaged their CD collections and ended up taking about 30 or so CDs home. it was a good night and fun was had by all, although it could have been better.

MxPEEx: Teenage Shmolitics [Aug. 17th, 2005|11:16 pm]
[music |ana's song (open fire) - silverchair]

MxPEEx: Teenage Shmolitics

This is a very special post in celebration of a new album release from my favourite West Coast Punk outfit, MxPx. My love for Mx runs back to years 2001 and 2002, when I drew the Mx sk8er boi kid in maths as one of those point-plotting graphs. It was really hard, and I stayed up all night doing it, but in the end it looked quite rad. If I ever find it I will definitely post it up here. Mx has recently released a new album named Panic, and it has already received positive feedback. Daniel Brantley, who must know what he is talking about as he comes from www.chattanoogan.com, a “breaking news” website of some second-rate, local town halfway across the world, has already hailed the new release. Here’s what he said:

"MxPx has undergone a punk rock revival, and Panic is the result. They stripped every bit of gimmick and artificial sweetener from their brand of West Coast Punk. I couldn’t be happier with their effort, and neither could the thousands of punks who have been looking for a new battle cry to sing as they raise their banner and fists in the air."

If you are one of these ‘thousands of punks’ and are looking for a new battle cry to sing as you raise some ratty old Mx banner, you are entitled to receive nothing less than a prostate examination done by the business end of my steel-capped work boot.

During the two years that it took the guys to produce this album, we can see that a lot of thought has gone into the lyric-writing process. This is an area that they somewhat neglected on their seven previous albums. Apart from spelling mistakes and faulty grammar, their lyrics have been pioneered by emotions and teenage problems. They try to escape these problems by employing Yuri, a nerdy drummer, in the hope that he would attract some of his maths mates to see the band. By the way just because he wears thick bottle-cap glasses doesn’t make him suddenly hip or cool, and not a computer game junkie who is constantly browsing the net in search of new Mario64 cheats. Oh look! Yuri the rock star is wearing glasses as thick as the soles of his shoes; let’s all fellate him for being so fucking rebellious.

Mx’s debut album Pokinatcha shows exactly what I am talking about. The lyrical standout is entitled “Weak”, and it is just that – weak. It is a diluted song about how God is great and how the lead-singer, Mike, is small and weak, and how he would just love to spend a night with the old bearded fellow. Then Mike goes on to say this in his profile: “Most of them [songs] had two chords in them and really bad lyrics about all my teenage problems.” Not much changed, as MX continued to bring us their one-of-a-kind aural holocaust on their following albums. The three guys had serious trouble picking up; there is no doubt about this. Many of their songs that later came out speak of their on-going troubles with girls and how no one wants to hold them by their greasy mitts.

“Teenage Politics” is a song about the boys being very ‘confused’. They seem to want to rebel in true punk spirit, but don’t really have any idea about politics so they become confused on what to do. They say that they’ll never be like us, but then contradict themselves by saying that they’re just like us. This confuses them even more so, as well as the members of their stupid fan base, who are core enough fans to actually read their absolutely clueless lyrics. Here’s a sample:

“It’s not about control, it's about you and me and understanding teenage politics, it’s too confusing, politics shmolitics, it's too confusing…I’ll never be like you, I’ll never be like you, no no! I’m just like you!”

“Andrea” is a song about a special girl and includes some of the corniest lyrics I have ever seen. Get this:

“…I guess I was scared of being rejected…Your beautiful face – like God’s amazing grace…and kinda sorta held my hand…you looked at me, I looked at you, before you know, it’s time to go!”

The line about the girl’s face being just like God’s amazing grace, seems to belong in the song “Weak”, or as some of the lyrics in a song of one of those far-eastern oriental rock-bands, that have just recently converted their faith to Christianity, and now are obliged to write flaccid tunes wholly about the greatness of God. This one is followed up by this unforgettably poignant verse from “Punk Rawk Show”:

“It’s fell good, so we should share, we’re going to the punk rawk show! Oooohh!! Ooohh!!”

Note the extensive use of exclamation marks and Os and Hs, as well as rock being misspelt into “rawk”.

In closing, I would like to wholly dedicate this page to the thousands of Christian pop-punk admirers all over the world, whose foolishness and continued ignorance over the last few decades has fuelled the Western materialistic market, while ruining everything that the UK [real] punk scene stood for.

wandering down a dirt road and walking through knee-deep grass in search of a belt-buckle [Aug. 14th, 2005|10:02 pm]
[music |in other words - ben kweller]

on friday lunch time besty, pete and some year 9 bassist had a psychedelic jam in one of the music rooms. they drew quite a crowd and with good reason - they were fucking awesome! besty was on drums and pete on guitar, and about twenty of us where just sitting there in awe. i'd never seen the bass player in my life before, i didn't know he even went to our school but he just came up with sweet bass lines and was really good. pete used heas of effects and it was just really good. it was very pink floyd/mars volta influenced, and it made me really want them to record just so i could make them popular and spread the word about them to people. i don't know if besty is up for it though, although he'd be crazy not to be.

i bought the sweetest belt-buckle on friday afternoon. i just don't have a belt to put it on yet, but when i get one and it is on i will post a picture of it.

on friday night i went to pat's party. i don't even know the guy, i'd seen him twice before in my life but norris, paul and tom and pat were going so i thought i'd come too. i didn't get there till about 10 because mum couldn't give me a lift before then and that meant that i missed out on seeing amongst.the.shadows live! haha! paul said they covered freak my silverchair, but that it wasn't very good. it was awesome seeing paul and eamon since i hadn't seen them in a fair while. richard was there too and he was unusually suprised to see me there. then everyone left and they closed the band section off so we were just sitting there in the yard and then it started to rain. then paul and that left and briony, amy and i were forced to walk a couple of ks to the main road where my mum was waiting for us. it was pretty average.

on saturday after work i went to buy a shirt. it is unbelievable that you cannot buy a nice, plain white, long-sleeved shirt anymore. it took us about two hours to find one and it was ridiculously over-priced, but we had t purchse it as there were no others.

i watched rebel without a cause and a clockwork orange on saturday night/sunday morning. they were both good, but i fell asleep twice during clockwork orange, and once it was done i got a pearl jam concert from zurich in '92!

paul is going to nineinchnails on wednesday night with amy and briony. i think i will catch up with them after school and just fuck around in the city for a while.

the sky is a-fallin'? [Aug. 10th, 2005|08:22 pm]
[music |undecided (18/06/95) - silverchair]

today it snowed. just a couple of hours ago snow fell in melbourne. i really thing that is the first time i have seen snow in melbourne since i have been here. mum and i went down to safeway to by some bread and tim-tams and we got out of the car and there is snow all over the grass and this little red car is white. it was the coolest thing ever. i made a snowball and chucked it at tree.

it reminded me of my little wooden sled i used ot have when i was like 5, and i would always take it out and go down frozen footpaths and streets.

well it will all be metled tomorrow. don't eat the yellow snow, boys and girls.

cavemen and coloured candy [Aug. 10th, 2005|10:04 am]
[music |learn to hate - silverchair]

on monday afternoon i had life drawing again. this time we had to draw some old, hairy guy with really bushy long hair. it wasn't too bad but i had a cold so i didn't really feel like drawing. we ended up using charcoal, and brown and white colours as well, so some of the sketches sort of looked like the drawings you'd find on cave walls drawn by monkeys or something. on the last picture one of the guys in the group wrote "caveman" in the corner of his drawing and it was so fucking funny. the guy had this big hair and he was all hairy and caveman-ish, and then he went around looking at all of them and just quickly ignored that one.

jack and i are like the only year 11s that do it, everyone else is year 12 + there is some random 20-somthing year-old guy that comes as well. jack and i were talking about the formal and apparently mitch is having an after-party at his house. we listened to the stooges when we were packing up afterwards. gosh they are great.

i was supposed to go to get falls tickets on monday as well, but then we realised that it wasn't the 15th, so we'll get them next monday. wolfmother are playing falls! not too many bands have been announced, but the dandy warhols, the shins, the vasco era and the grates are all playing. there are also a couple of aussie hip-hop acts playing - cool! :|

i've eaten 6 and a half packs of PEZ in the last two days. they are so fucking good.

i'd rather be at home with my cigarettes and handcream, paul [Aug. 7th, 2005|09:55 pm]
[music |happiness - elliott smith]

i went to buy a suit for the formal yesterday. i wanted a sweet velvet one but because i couldn't find one like that in a store other than an op-shop, i had to settle for another. it is grey and cool. everyone will be wearing black, pin-stripes, and gay ties. grey is cool. i didn't buy a shirt or a tie. i don't have a clue what kind of shirt to wear and all the ties in the shop were all the real cheap-looking ones that foorball commentators wear on tv. i want a slim-tie, and not one of the fat beefy ones. i'm thinking black.
the lady at the shop gave me a suggestion...

me: i don't know what kind of tie to get.

shop-keeper lady: how about you try on this very trendy light pink one? it will go rather well with your suit.

me: i hate pink shirts, especially light pink shirts.

then she suggested a light green one. i said no.

begging is so much better than music when the lights go out. so there.
